For the past year, the Belgian Wies De Boevé has been playing as principal double bassist in the orchestra – and now he can also be seen performing as a soloist. He will perform a concerto by Giovanni Bottesini, who was himself a virtuoso on this instrument (and also a sought-after conductor who, amongst other things, premiered Verdi’s ‘Aida’). Like the other works in the programme, Bottesini’s double bass concerto will be conducted by participants in the Conductors’ Academy, which is taking place for the first time before the start of the season. And even though all the pieces were composed in the 19th century, the young conductors will be able to showcase their skills across a wide range of styles.
