Beethoven's "Missa solemnis" was first performed (in part) in Vienna's Kärntnerthortheater in 1824, on the same evening that his Symphony No. 9 was premiered. Even today, this work is performed almost exclusively in concert halls: although it is a solemn mass, it goes beyond the liturgical framework. Although Beethoven studied the mass text and older settings intensively, he did not compose this work for a pious community, but for the Viennese public. He wanted to use all the means at his disposal to "awaken religious feelings and make them last", as he put it in a letter. The fact that one reviewer subsequently praised his "divine musical art" is perfectly fitting.
