DESCRIPTION:Paul Hindemith is undoubtedly a promising candidate for the award for the most original title of an instrumental concerto: "Der Schwandendreher" is the title of his 1935 viola concerto. On the one hand, the title refers to a folk song about a man who turned spits at a time when swans were still considered delicacies; on the other hand, and above all, it refers to a travelling minstrel whose hurdy-gurdy has a swan-shaped handle. Hindemith saw himself as homeless; how alien his German homeland became to him during the Nazi era cannot be ignored in this work. He often played the solo part himself - here it is played by violist Tabea Zimmermann, who is not only committed to Hindemith's work as a musician, but also as President of the Swiss Hindemith Foundation.
