The Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla made her debut at the 2024 Salzburg Festival with an opera by Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996) - now she is introducing herself to Zurich audiences with his Symphony No. 5. Weinberg was a close ally of Shostakovich, who had supported him at the beginning of his career: the two showed each other their works before publication, and when Weinberg was arrested under Stalin's regime, Shostakovich stood up for him with a courageous letter. Weinberg's Symphony No. 5 by no means fulfils Stalin's requirements: The finale is not triumphant, but strikingly restrained. Before that, he repeatedly contrasts an ideal world with brutal reality - and a sadness that is expressed in touching wind solos.
