Programme change: Hilary Hahn now plays Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 instead of Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1.
Paavo Järvi has long wanted to perform works by Arthur Honegger and record them on CD, "not just because he was Swiss, but because he was a good composer". Now our Music Director is conducting the Symphony No. 2 for strings and trumpet to kick off his Honegger project. The work was premièred in Zurich in 1942 under the direction of Paul Sacher; its sombre mood reflects the catastrophe of the Second World War, until a chorale at the end gives a hint of hope. The Mahler cycle continues with the Adagio from Mahler's unfinished Symphony No. 10. In between, Hilary Hahn plays Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 - a work in which she can utilise her sense of balance as well as her stupendous virtuosity.
