Opera in a concert hall? Yes, it works perfectly well, even without a fly loft or backstage area. Eva Buchmann has already demonstrated this at the Tonhalle Maag, where she conjured up everything needed for Haydn’s opera “Lo speziale” from a Fiat 500. Now, with Rossini’s ‘La scala di seta’, she once again presents a fast-paced and intrigue-filled romantic comedy in a semi-staged version. Right from the now-famous overture, this opera – which premiered in Venice in 1812 – sets its musical machinery in motion, to which Rossini’s characters are subsequently hopelessly at the mercy of. The romantic entanglements are complicated; the orchestra, conducted by Jan Willem de Vriend, will have to help the secret lovers overcome all manner of hurdles – but in the end, all is well.
