Sometimes alone, sometimes together

Camille Saint-Saëns was not only a composer, pianist and organist, but also a poet, astronomer, ethnologist, caricaturist and journalist – in short, one of the last polymaths in music history. His cello concerto, on the other hand, is as demanding as it is rich in finesse and is something for specialists. Sol Gabetta has had it in her repertoire since her youth – and has by no means had enough of it. Paavo Järvi conducts two mythical narratives: Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" (with the enchanting flute solo) and Sibelius' "Lemminkäinen Legends" with the famous "Swan of Tuonela" (and the equally enchanting English horn solo).
