SUMMARY:Thomas Adès & Kirill Gerstein
DESCRIPTION:Two of this season's protagonists join forces in this concert: our Creative Chair Thomas Adès conducts the orchestra for the first time - and our focus artist Kirill Gerstein takes on the solo part in the piano concerto that Adès wrote for him in 2019. Gerstein said in an interview that it is a concerto that is part of the great tradition of concertos by Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Ravel, "and definitely one of the most important concertos written for piano in the last 50 or 60 years". With Ravel's piano concerto for the left hand, the pianist will then play another important work in this tradition. The framework for the two concertos, on the other hand, leads into geological realms: Sibelius once described his Symphony No. 3 as a "crystallisation of chaos", while both the title and the compositional structure of Adè's "Aquifer" refer to water-saturated rock strata.\n\nJean Sibelius Sinfonie Nr. 3 C-Dur op. 52\n\nThomas Adès Klavierkonzert\n\n PauseMaurice Ravel Klavierkonzert D-Dur «für die linke Hand»\n\nThomas Adès «Aquifer» für Orchester
