On 31 March 1824, Franz Schubert wrote to his friend, the painter Leopold Kupelwieser, that he wanted to "pave his way to the great symphony in this way". By this "way" he was referring, among other things, to his Octet in F major. However, the work was not only intended to lead him to the symphony; it concluded a longer phase in which Schubert had moved away from chamber music in favour of opera and the symphony. Although the octet opened a new series of chamber music works, they were no longer intended solely for the original context of Schubert's music – private domestic music: It was aimed at the big stages and public concert audiences. This masterpiece, which lasts more than an hour, no longer merely presents the sounds of chamber music, but also - thanks to the octet instrumentation - Schubert's symphonic sound world.
