In the 18th century, a "Sinfonia concertante" was understood to be a symphony in which various instruments played solo parts. If there is now only a string sextet on stage, each instrument becomes a solo instrument in one way or another – after all, the sextet replaces a small orchestra and solos. Especially in Mozart's Sinfonia concertante KV 364, composed in 1779/80, arrangements for smaller ensembles have long been the norm - the first documented one was published in 1808. However, unlike the string quartet, the string sextet is a less institutionalised genre. If one had to find a starting point for this, however, it would be Johannes Brahms' two string sextets – in particular the second in G major op. 36, which was immediately celebrated by reviewers and Brahms was honoured as a "genius of musical art" in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung in 1862.
