Anyone involved in culture in Switzerland knows Hedy Graber. Born in Kriens in 1961, the cultural manager headed the Directorate of Culture and Social Affairs at the Migros Cooperative Federation from 2004 to 2024. She was elected Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG at the Annual General Meeting on 29 January 2025. We asked her five questions on this occasion.
Hedy Graber, do you play an instrument?
As the daughter of a musician, I was allowed to skip recorder lessons and started playing the piano and violin at an early age. As a teenager, I bought a guitar with my pocket money, but stopped playing any instrument quite quickly. I am an enthusiastic and good listener.
What was your first classical concert?
I don't remember it, but I will never forget one concert: the interplay between Yehudi Menuhin and Ravi Shankar at the Lucerne International Music Festival in the 1970s. I was deeply impressed by the interaction that transcended cultural boundaries at the highest level.
What do you think about in concert?
Music is good for the mind. Sometimes I dwell on thoughts, other times I don't think about anything at all and let the music inspire me. One thing is certain: after a concert, you go home energised and inspired. Music is a very direct experience and certainly good for your well-being!
Can you fall in love with music?
Absolutely! And always anew! There is music that accompanies you over long periods and then there are also short musical infatuations ... It's all in the mix! I can't wait to see what music I'll fall in love with in the coming season with the Tonhalle Orchestra!
What do you admire in artists?
I have the greatest respect for artistic work and admire people who dedicate their lives to music, for example. This often goes hand in hand with sacrifice, high performance and humility, practising every day anew, fine-tuning interpretations to find exactly the right tone and offering the audience a unique experience.
