Concert recording: Dessner's "Mari"

Paavo Järvi conducts Bryce Dessner's minimalist-romantic orchestral work.

in 2021, Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich premiered Bryce Dessner's romantic-minimalist orchestral work "Mari" in the Tonhalle Maag - and the work was such a hit that they presented it again in the "real" Tonhalle in December 2023. Bryce Dessner, who became famous with the band The National, shaped and accompanied the Zurich season as Creative Chair. Both the audience and the orchestra were able to immerse themselves deeply in his musical language, which charges minimalist elements with maximum expression and seeks opulent colours, yet does not appear overloaded. The way a free-swinging sound emerges from nothing in the first few bars and then builds up rhythmically: That is typical Dessner. And a perfect template for Paavo Järvi and the orchestra.
