Concert recording: Fauré's "Super flumina Babylonis"

Paavo Järvi conducts the astonishing composition of an 18-year-old.

Gabriel Fauré's "Super flumina Babylonis" for soloists, choir and orchestra is a rarity - in both senses of the word. The work, which Fauré composed as an 18-year-old on Psalm no. 136, which also inspired Verdi's famous "Va, pensiero", is performed extremely rarely. And it was the first of only three major sacred compositions from his pen. Fauré wrote it in 1863 for the end-of-year competition of the École de musique classique et religieuse. The work was well received by the jury: it was rated "very honourable", and the music critic of the "Ménestrel" described it as "extremely remarkable". Paavo Järvi conducts the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the Zurich Singakademie.
