Mahler cycle

Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 7 on CD and vinyl

This is our third release from the complete Mahler cycle, which will be recorded over several seasons.

Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich continue their complete recording of Mahler's symphonies with the Seventh, widely regarded as one of his most complex and challenging. "The Mahler we encounter in the Seventh Symphony is more complex, darker and more philosophical than the Mahler of the previous works," says our Music Director. The symphonies were recorded in November 2024 as part of concerts at the Grosse Tonhalle and are now being released not only on CD by Alpha Classics. For lovers of black lacquer, this symphony will also be released as an LP.

The seventh symphony, which is also known as the "Song of the Night" and which Paavo Järvi describes as his favourite of the entire cycle, captivates with its lavish orchestration (the fourth movement even features guitar and mandolin) and spectacular sound effects. "Nature roars here", Mahler is said to have said about the tenor horn solo at the beginning of the work.
