Richard Strauss «Metamorphosen» (Fassung für Streichseptett Rudolf Leopold)
Venice and Buenos Aires have a few things in common. In both cities, the average temperature in the warmest month (July and January respectively) is a good 23 degrees. And both triggered the composition of "Four Seasons": Astor Piazzolla's "Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas", originally written for violin, piano, electric guitar, double bass and bandoneon, were written as an answer to Vivaldi's famous violin concertos. And they too became famous, so famous that numerous arrangements of them exist; we present here the one for string quartet. The second work on the programme is also an arrangement, or actually rather the reconstruction of an original intention: Richard Strauss actually had a string septet in mind – until the Basel patron Paul Sacher asked him to orchestrate the "Metamorphoses" for 23 strings.
