Concert recording: Bruckner's Symphony No. 3
As part of the Bruckner cycle, Paavo Järvi and the orchestra presented an energetic third symphony.
Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 3 was once the first to be performed in the Tonhalle Zurich. That was in January 1898, when Richard Strauss conducted the work during a guest performance by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
In November 2023, this third work was once again on the programme as part of the Bruckner cycle – in the third version from 1889. "With its great classical-romantic tradition, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich is ideally suited to Bruckner," says Paavo Järvi. And he argues in favour of a dynamic, forward-moving interpretation of these symphonies: "If Bruckner's music has always been dismissed as 'static' in the past, it is being done an injustice."
